Your Neighborhood

Dear Teachers:

"Your neighborhood" encourages students to use the newspaper to explore their neighborhoods. In the company of a friendly, double-headed space creature, each student will travel through familiar places and possibly, visit some uncharted territory.

Sample Activity:

Nars and Lars, two friendly space creatures in one, are heading toward Earth to carry out an important mission: to find out about your neighborhood! They've heard it's a special place with special people, but they want to see for themselves. Can you help them find their way around?

Where is your favorite place to visit — share this place with the class. Talk about why you would like to go there. Can you find it in your newspaper? Stories and pictures in your newspaper come from real places. Find some other places in your newspaper for Nars and Lars to visit while they're here on Earth.

For example, find an address in an ad. Use MapQuest and your internet skills to map your trip there. Research several ways of getting to your destination and decide which route would be the fastest. Don't get lost!
